Congruent or Similar?

Learning Objective: Identify the similar figures and congruent figures.

Duration: 15 – 20 min

Materials:

  • 2 balls of the same size
  • One bigger ball
  • 2 blocks of the same size
  • Bags containing similar & congruent shapes
  • Measurement tools (ruler, compass, protractor)

Activity Description:

  • Divide your class into groups of five
  • The teacher organizes the class in a semi-circular way.
  • The teacher tosses the balls to the students; the one who catches it will state the characteristics (size, shape…)
  • And compare and contrast with the characteristics of the other shapes. All students will take turn. One student will write the answer on the board.
  • Students will conclude that there are shapes having the same size and same shape and others look the same but do not have the exact same size.
  • Then, introduce the terms congruent and similar as well as their symbols.
  • Finally, arrange the students to groups; provide each group with a bag of similar and congruent shapes. Let them use measuring tools to group and classify congruent and similar shapes.
