Distributed leadership is essential due to the expansion of leadership tasks and responsibilities where the model of the singular, heroic leader is at last being replaced with leadership that is focused upon teams rather than individuals and places.
Distributed leadership is finding the best solutions and plans based on the expertise, ideas, and efforts of people within the working place. It means consolidating best practices and sharing experience rather than delegation. This brings success in handling problems, threats, and change because it not only encourages idea sharing; it demands it.
Distributed Leadership allows all parties to look for better ways to handle the situations arising within rather than following the same path and trying same solutions tested before. In such environment of collaboration mistakes lead to discovering valuable new approaches.
Distributed Leadership is about cooperation and trust, not about competition among units and factions. All members share the same mission, even though they contribute to it in different ways but not everyone is a decision-maker. As an individual you are an expert whose knowledge contributes to the decision-making process.
In a distributed leadership environment everybody matters, individuals are empowered to make his or her job more efficient, meaningful, and effective.
In particular in a school distributed leadership the impact is achieved through improved communication of mission and goals, better alignment of resources and structures to support students, more active engaged professional learning among staff, and the ability to maintain a focus on innovations in teaching and learning by those responsible for implementation. This yields to general school improvement through the unified collaborative efforts that are done to ensure the implementation of the school goals which yields to students’ progress. In this environment, everyone is accountable for his own work, motivated, satisfied, valued and respected. Teachers play a major role in decision making through the continuous objective feedback that they give based on their everyday experience in classes with the students. Such data and information which are taken into consideration allows the decision makers to plan and set strategic goals in a realistic manner.
