What is an Effective Feedback?

 

 

An effective feedback is a statement, whether verbal or written, about the reaction to a person’s performance, task, project, or output which is given to that person for the purpose of improvement. A feedback can be considered effective to students if it is given to them in order to perform better in the assigned task or activity. An effective feedback targets two important factors: cognitive and motivational factors.

 

 

The cognitive factor is achieved since providing students with effective feedback regarding their work will help teachers identify the student’s weakness to a particular lesson and guide them gradually in the process for better learning.

 

 

The motivational factor is achieved since students will understand and catch up with the lesson and will feel that they can be responsible of their own learning and at the same time, they will feel good because they discovered that they can do better.

 

 

Points to Consider in Giving an Effective Feedback to Students:

  • Focus on the success criteria or the specific learning objective.

 

  • Act as a facilitator of learning and let students learn how to learn on their own.

 

  • Provide students with reasons why the learning objective is not achieved and use it to facilitate the students’ learning.

 

  • Use different strategies and techniques for student improvement.

 

  • It should promote learning by increasing motivation.

 

  • It should point out strengths and provide specific information for student improvement.

 

  • The feedback is intended to inform the students about the things that need improvement.

 

  • It provides support and guidance to perform better especially in reasoning.
