Assessment techniques are used to gather information for evaluation. Information gathered through assessment helps teachers determine students’ strengths and needs in their achievement and guides future instructional approaches. Teachers adapt the assessment tools that suits the taught subject and promoted content.
Evaluation involves the weighing of the assessment information against a standard in order to make an evaluation or judgment about student achievement.
Why do we assess students?
This is a major question and its answer determines many elements that has to be taken into consideration before we attempt to asses students. A teacher needs to know what the students know and what they are able to do. The obtained data from assessments has to be analyzed. This data affects the teaching and learning. The teacher will provide students with effective feedback to allow them to know their strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, the teacher will adjust the lesson plan based on students’ performance.
Assessment has three main forms:
- Assessment for learning: assessment for learning guides and informs instruction
- Assessment as learning: assessment as learning aims to involves students in self-assessment and setting goals for their own learning
- Assessment of learning: assessment of learning aims to make judgments about student performance in relation to curriculum outcomes.
