Learning Objective: Identify the similar figures and congruent figures.
Duration: 15 – 20 min
Materials:
- 2 balls of the same size
- One bigger ball
- 2 blocks of the same size
- Bags containing similar & congruent shapes
- Measurement tools (ruler, compass, protractor)
Activity Description:
- Divide your class into groups of five
- The teacher organizes the class in a semi-circular way.
- The teacher tosses the balls to the students; the one who catches it will state the characteristics (size, shape…)
- And compare and contrast with the characteristics of the other shapes. All students will take turn. One student will write the answer on the board.
- Students will conclude that there are shapes having the same size and same shape and others look the same but do not have the exact same size.
- Then, introduce the terms congruent and similar as well as their symbols.
- Finally, arrange the students to groups; provide each group with a bag of similar and congruent shapes. Let them use measuring tools to group and classify congruent and similar shapes.
