What does SEN stands for?
SEN are students with Special Educational Needs. As per the “United Arab Emirates School Inspection Framework 2015-2016(p.127), SEN is defined as:
“Educational needs that are different from those of the majority of students. Students with SEN require additional support or challenge in order to make good progress.”
Those students can not walk through the main stream of the school curriculum. They need to have a different provision that is customized to suit their individual needs. The school is expected structure a modified curriculum for every individual student that is relevant, meaningful and achievable. The modified curriculum takes into consideration the individual abilities and interests of SEN students and sets high expectations for each one as per their potential to attain and progress through out the academic year. SEN has to be challenged with learning targets appropriate to their abilities.
What is a modified curriculum?
A Modified Curriculum is an outline for a curriculum that is designed based on individual identified needs of an SEN student. It defines what the school will do in order to support the objectives stated in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). It modifies the core content standards and outcomes using different materials from other students. It also provides activities to develop modified student outcomes in the context of regular classroom setting.
