Three Pillars of Education

Curriculum, instruction, and assessment are the three pillars of education. The success of an educational organization is dependent on the degree of alignment among them. Many schools adapt same international curricula such as American curriculum or National curriculum but are those schools performing similarly? The international curriculum outlines the general pathway of students from k-12 but this outline is an abstract plan. A school has to set a clear provision for the teaching methodologies, resources and instructional strategies used to deliver the content. The appropriateness of the approaches used to deliver the content can either yield to success or failure. At this point, the assessment practices which reflect the proficiency level of students validate the suitability of the approach to deliver the intended content.

In brief, there are three main components that tells the whole story of an educational institution: Intended Curriculum, Implemented Curriculum, and Attained Curriculum.

Intended Curriculum: is the set of standards that set the expectations of academic achievements of students at the end of every grade level.

Implemented Curriculum: is the set of instructional strategies used at a school to deliver the content knowledge as defined in the intended curriculum.

Attained Curriculum: refers to the student outcomes based from the intended and implemented curriculum. It is described as performance indicators measured by different assessment tools.
