Motivate …..do not threaten

Many students keep posing such questions in class:

  • Why are we learning this?
  • How am I going to use this idea in real life?
  • My everyday experience has nothing to do with this abstract topic, correct?
  • Can you give me a real life example about this concept?

Real learning can only happen if people feel there is a need to learn or if the content is meaningful and real. Plan the lessons to make your students feel the importance of what you are discussing by connecting it to reality. This will make your learning experience a joyful journey full of enthusiasm.

Threatening students with assessments, results, retention will have a temporary impact on their performance. Students who tend to study only for the purpose of being assessed tend to forget almost all what they have learned in a very short period. That is due to the lack of connection with prior knowledge and real world experiences. So, if assessment performance is a target for an educational system then learning is not taking place. The process is retaining and reciting not learning.

Think about Piaget theory………..Think about constructivism………….Make your content real and authentic……….
